Take the wheel. It's your turn to drive.

Gloria and David in October 1998.

Born in Long Island, Gloria Gallagher was the oldest girl of five kids. She attended finishing school and worked for a few years when she met her late husband David. They met only because of misdelivered mail during WWII. She had intended her letter for a classmate with the very same name!

After a couple years of marriage, they had three children and moved from New York to the sunny state of California. While in New York, David studied for his Master's in Education and would eventually work as a principal for an elementary school until he retired. Gloria supported him throughout his schooling years.
"I (supported him) in many ways. Not just moneywise. To make him feel that this was the right thing to do, to be comfortable and not to worry that he doesn’t have a full-time job. But he worked whenever and wherever he could.”

As a mother of three, Gloria kept busy with Little League, Girl Scouts, and various after school events. While her husband worked for the public schools, her children attended Catholic school. They went on to college, married their sweethearts, and had their own children.

Gloria and David moved to Texas in 2008 because her sister (Lillian) lives in Central Texas. When David was diagnosed with cancer, they moved to Florida where they heard one of the best surgeons was located. They shared over 60 years of marriage. After his passing, she decided to move back to Texas to be closer to her children and sister.

Gloria learned of the services of Faith in Action through Meals on Wheels.
"She said to me You don’t drive do you. I said, no I don’t. I used to.  She gave me all the literature and telephone numbers. The first time I called, she said oh yes, we would be happy (to serve you). She said we will come and pick you up and take you to doctors or wherever you have to go. I thought it was Heaven on Wheels. From that time on I have made the acquaintance of such wonderful people who drive. Just, they couldn’t be nicer, and they make you feel right at home. That was just perfect. ”

Thank you Gloria for sharing your story with Faith in Action.
